2014: Our Favorite Records of the Year...

2014 was an amazing year in commercial music - two new Brian Eno records, a slew of amazing reissues and box sets (Spiderland vinyl box and Complete Basement Tapes anyone???), not to mention some amazing performances (Father John Misty on Letterman and St. Vincent on SNL!) and 2015 is looking pretty promising already (new records from Sleater-Kinney, Belle and Sebastian, Father John Misty, and Bjork?? Yeah!) ...but back to 2014! There were seriously like a hundred or more simply sublime releases this past year - we hemmed and hawed through em and whittled it down to the below... Here are the High Bias crew's favoritest albums of the past year. Drum roll please...

DAVID ABPLANALP-ESTIMÉ
"2014 was definitely a rich year for music, and certainly brought comfort among a lot of grim news in the world. A few labels and artists had a stellar production: Innovative Leisure comes to mind in my case, releasing brilliant albums from very different acts while keeping great coherence in their roster. A top 30 would have been easily filled with Lewis or Sylvie Simmons - both thanks to Light In The Attic - having their place in the reissue section, or among the Frenchies Para One who keeps expanding his musical boundaries with his great OST to Girlhood, a beautiful follow-up to Music To And From Naissance des Pieuvres a few years back. Excited to hear what’s coming up in 2015!"

Devonté Hynes "Palo Alto OST" (Domino)
Moodoid "Le Monde Moo" (Entreprise)
The Budos Band "Burnt Offering" (Daptone)
Nick Waterhouse "Holly" (Innovative Leisure)
Laetitia Sadier "Something Shines" (Drag City)
De Lux "Voyage" (Innovative Leisure)
Badbadnotgood "III" (Innovative Leisure)
Todd Terje "It's Album Time" (Olsen Records)
Avi Buffalo "At Best Cuckold" (Sub Pop)
Timber Timbre "Hot Dreams" (Arts & Crafts)

DANNY EXUM
"2014 was filled with amazing music, from the bombastic Run the Jewels 2 to the mellow Morning Phase. It seemed that around every corner, somebody was passing me a new record that I 'had to listen to'...  I ended up drowning in great music. That’s such a good problem to have. Here’s to more great and challenging music in 2015!"

Run The Jewels "Run The Jewels 2" (Mass Appeal)
Badbadnotgood "III" (Innovative Leisure)
Khun Narin's Electric Phin Band "Khun Narin" (Innovative Leisure)
De Lux "Voyage" (Innovative Leisure)
TV On The Radio "Seeds" (Harvest)
St. Vincent "St. Vincent" (Seven Four/Republic)
Beck "Morning Phase" (Capitol)
Young Fathers "Dead" (Anticon)
Vince Staples "Hell Can Wait" (Def Jam/Artium)
D'Angelo and the Vanguard "Black Messiah" (RCA)

TODDRICK SPALDING
"This was a hard year - war, violence and disease seemed to dominate every headline and a lot of too young people passed. But despite it all, as it always does, music provided the light in otherwise dark days. I was extremely moved by a lot of songs this year - getting teary eyed listening to Eno + Hyde's 'Return' for the first time comes to mind immediately - and there were so so so many great records - these were the ones I kept coming back to again and again..."
