Featured Record Label: THIRDSIDE RECORDS

As you know, we love amazing music. And we love to help expose our friends to amazing music. So here is some amazing music:

http://www.yousendit.com/download/T2dmeEVUQ0NRR2MxWjhUQw

We're extremely excited to share this mix of tracks from one of France's most exciting indie labels: THIRD SIDE RECORDS (not to be confused with our Canadian friends Third Side Music). Born in 2001, Third Side Records is one of France's most diverse labels, bringing to the world Syd matters' amazing melding of electronica and pop (as heard in The OC and a ton of French cinema) but also La Femme, France's latest indie sensation, or Cocosuma's sweet'n'sour electro. You'll also hear Steeple Remove's psychedelic krautrocky misadventures, Fugu's classic hand-woven pop, the fun and irreverent world of Flairs, the dark and futuristic world of Splash Wave or the delicate French songs of Austine (featured in Gossip Girl last season!), the beautiful folk harmonies of Domingo and an unreleased song by Tahiti Boy & the Palmtree Family!

RIP David "Honeyboy" Edwards

I was blessed to be able to see him perform an in-store at the Borders I was working at in Chicago in 1999, despite the surroundings it was amazing. One of the last true original bluesmen! RIP Honeyboy! You will be missed!

Check Honeyboy's official website here for more info on the legendary man: http://www.davidhoneyboyedwards.com

Littlerock Opens Next Week

On August 12th Littlerock will open in select theaters around the US! I'm stoked that my mom can finally see it! NYC friends can see it at Cinema Village, LA friends will have to wait until September 2nd when the film opens at Laemmle Sunset 5!

Indiewire just named Littlerock as one of 7 indie films you must see on their site. Check it here and the Huffington Post tagged it as one the great films to see this summer. Not too shabby! I'm super proud of the film and Mike Ott. It's up there as one of my favorite projects I've had the privilege to work on. Aces!

File Under Rad: Wu Note Project

It's old and everyone has probably already seen all this - but, I was thinking about how rad this was the other day and wanted to look at the whole collection again. Then I decided to post it here. Graphic artist Logan Walters re-imagines Wu-Tang Clan cover art as seen through the eyes and pen of Reid Miles, Blue Note Records in house art director... just brilliant.

See the whole set here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/loganmills/sets/72157617640418633/with/5690831810/

and if you want to get a taste of just how amazing Reid Miles' design was, check these: http://www.birkajazz.com/archive/blueNote4000.htm

A love letter to my city.

Three years ago we started composing a love letter. An ode to the city I was born in and grew up in. An idea to celebrate this city and it's unique musical history - a history that shaped our life, our world view, and who we are. It was a solid concept. But this concept would find it's purpose in January of 2010. Watching the news, and looking at photos on Huffington Post in the wake of Haiti's devastating earthquake, we decided to help the only way we knew how, with the only thing that ever mattered to us: music.

Curated by myself, Angel Mendoza and our good friend Shahin Ewalt of Narnack Records, released jointly by Angel and my label Greatminds and Narnack Records and featuring liner notes from LA scene legend Geza X, BEAT LA brings together some of our favorite LA based artists donating their time and music for an amazing cause (100% of profits generated from sales of the record will benefit Doctors Without Borders and their efforts in Haiti). The concept is simple. LA bands we love covering the songs of LA bands we love from the past, all to help the cause.

You can pre-order the compilation on iTunes here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/preorder/beat-la-a-benefit-for-haiti/id449024995

We'll be following up the digital release with cd and double LP gatefold vinyl soon!!!!

Also Pitchfork is previewing the first single off the comp, Crystal Antlers' take on Black Randy and Metrosquad's "I Slept In An Arcade"... you can download it here: http://www.pitchfork.com/forkcast/15992-i-slept-in-an-arcade-black-randy-the-metrosquad-cover/

'Tis the season...

...for dope remix projects. In addition to the Divas of Joy Division and the upcoming Wu Tang meets Fugazi on wednesday, I just read on Boing Boing about the latest mash-up mix by Max Tannone, he of Jaydiohead fame. This time mashing my 2nd favorite Wu dude (behind Ol' Dirty but ahead of Method Man) - Ghostface Killah - with African funk, highlife and psych rock... here is the link to download: http://www.maxtannone.com/projects/ghostfunk/

Joy Division vs. Nancy Sinatra

via Dangerous Minds

"Divas of Joy Division" mashes up Joy Division songs with female vocals by folks like Beyonce, etc. People are too clever. Anyway you can download it here. I think Nancy's vocal is an amazing pairing with She's Lost Control. Pretty neat. Whets my appetite for Wugazi next week.

Happy Birthday America!

Happy 4th of July comrades!

I love summer. The smell is in the air of BBQ's and everything is sweaty and smells like vacation. Every summer is "punk rock summer" for me, time to dust off my Jawbreaker, Crimpshrine and Descendents records and get stoked!

London Calling, please answer!

Happy Tuesday Clash fans!  This is a very rad breakdown of all the parts that make up The Clash's iconic tune "London Calling".  It's all there: bass, drums, guitars, and Strummer's menacing vocal.  Enjoy!

High Bias Mixtape Series Vol 7: "Pas de printemps pour Mimix"

Mix by special guest Michel (of Cocosuma!)

Just in time for Spring! A celebration of pop from one our favorite artists in Europe, this month's mix is sure to put a smile on your face!
'New York, London, Paris, Munich
Everybody talk about Pop Muzik'"
